Bright Downtown Tokyo Signs

Subject

Tokyo Olympics in Corporate Marketing/Signage

Description

The 1964 Tokyo Olympics was seen as an opportunity for Japanese economic revitalization and modernization. The picture shows the various brightly lit advertisements and signs in Downtown Tokyo one year before the Tokyo Olympics. Emergent Japanese corporations associated themselves with the Tokyo Olympics in order to garner a global consumer base and appear more modern. Elaborate rotating and shiny signs with fancy logos in romanized Japanese transform the urban landscape into a modern area for Western consumption.
